Gratitude is a feeling that is key to happiness and it is most definitely not something to save for one day (or week) per year, like Thanksgiving. We really must raise our experience of gratitude all year round. 

Don’t fret, we’re here to help!

This is a fast-moving conversation with a funny, clever, and wise man so hold on to your hat! I just had to rebroadcast my episode with guest and one of my favorite mentors, Michael Bungay Stanier. Michael is an award-winning and sought-after coach, author, and speaker. We talked about his best-selling book, The Coaching Habit. Michael wants us leaders to learn to stay a little more curious a little longer and rush to ideas and advice a little more slowly, which will ultimately let us be more effective and work less hard. He teaches us three of the seven coaching questions from his book that will help you have better coach-like conversations that take 10 minutes or less. We discuss the neuroscience of engagement, ways to help people get more ‘Ahas’ to cement their insights and learning, and the kind of question we should all try to avoid. I loved his concept of the Advice Monster (which is the topic of the latest bestselling book which Michael published after this episode first aired, titled The Advice Trap). Receiving feedback is an important leadership skill that we can all develop, and it’s not just up to managers to give it – it’s something we all can and should do more of (and ask for!) and improve our skills in doing so. In this rebroadcast episode of the TalentGrow show with Halelly Azulay, Sheila Heen, CEO of Triad Consulting and best-selling author of Thanks for the Feedback and Difficult Conversations, shares some of her best insights on the art and science of receiving feedback. She explains what the three different kinds of feedback are (including why we need all three, but different amounts of each at different times), what the three kinds of triggered reactions we can have from feedback are, and the best way to receive vague or negative criticism. She also gives a fantastic (and highly actionable!) tip on how to ask for feedback: she warns of a common pitfall and offers a smarter way of asking that not only makes the other person more comfortable but helps to ensure that the ensuing feedback will be relevant and useful. The “feedback sandwich” is a popular method of delivering constructive feedback. It basically means sandwiching your negative feedback inside of positive feedback to lessen the blow, and it can seem reasonable at first glance. But I’m hoping that after you listen to this episode, you’ll never use the feedback sandwich ever again. On this solo episode of The TalentGrow Show, I explain why the popular feedback sandwich method is actually harmful and ineffective in the long-run, and what approach you should be using instead when you deliver constructive feedback.
