When something positive happens, we instinctively tend to want to share our good news with others. From a relationship-building perspective, research is plentiful when it comes to supporting others in times of distress, but there is very little out there about responding constructively to someone else’s good news. On this episode of The TalentGrow Show, psychologist and professor at UC Santa Barbara Shelly Gable, Ph.D. joins Halelly to discuss her theoretical and practical framework for nurturing our relationships and generating positive outcomes with our responses. Drawing from many years of research, Shelly explains why our responses to positive news make up such a key aspect of our relationships, why Active and Constructive Responding (ACR) is the most effective and authentic way to respond, and how leaders can leverage ACR to build better relationships at work and at home. Listen and remember to share this episode with others!

The “feedback sandwich” is a popular method of delivering constructive feedback. It basically means sandwiching your negative feedback inside of positive feedback to lessen the blow, and it can seem reasonable at first glance. But I’m hoping that after you listen to this episode, you’ll never use the feedback sandwich ever again. On this solo episode of The TalentGrow Show, I explain why the popular feedback sandwich method is actually harmful and ineffective in the long-run, and what approach you should be using instead when you deliver constructive feedback. So listen and, please, don’t serve up that nasty feedback sandwich anymore!

Giving feedback can be one of the toughest tasks for leaders. Many of us are reluctant to give critical feedback, partly from fear of seeming like a jerk. The best approach, according to bestselling author and former Google executive Kim Scott, is to care personally while challenging directly. She calls this radical candor. On this episode of The TalentGrow Show, Kim joins Halelly to share how leaders can become great bosses without losing our humanity by leveraging the Radical Candor framework. You’ll learn how to feedback without falling into the common traps of obnoxious aggression, manipulative insincerity, or ruinous empathy, and why you probably need to reevaluate the way you think about praise and criticism. Plus, find out why it’s a mistake to avoid people who are mad at you! Listen to this episode and be sure to share it with others.

Life is not easy and all of us face cross-roads where we need to make a big, scary decision. We all face the fear of making the wrong decision, but sometimes that fear can lead to inaction or playing safe. But if we use this clarifying question, we can usually move forward to choose a path of no (or least) regrets. On this solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, the third in my three-part mini-series on courage, I tell two short stories: One, about a young woman’s career choice. And the other, about a decision that my spouse, David, and I faced with our skater son Guy’s schooling. And I describe how asking a magic question helped create clarity and courage for forward momentum and a life of no regrets. Take a listen, weigh in with your own opinion, and share with others could use this suggestion!

A mistake many busy leaders make is to just focus on getting the work done. They fall into the role of task master and interact with their team members on a task-basis only. Your workplace interactions with your employees should be about more than just work tasks. The more that your team members feel like you care to see and know them as humans (not just workers), the more they feel a brain-based need to reciprocate that same care and attention. Caring, vulnerability, curiosity, kindness, and caring build trust. In this solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, Halelly shares a personal story from a recent workshop in which learning this lesson deeply moved the participants and generated insights and commitments to change. She discusses why you should increase your intimacy with your team members – to know them better – and how to get started (plus what NOT to do). Take a listen, weigh in with your own opinion, and share with others!

Stress is something we all struggle with in our personal and professional lives. There are over 129,000 deaths in the US every year attributed to stress alone. On this episode of The TalentGrow Show, neuroscientist and board-certified psychiatrist Dr. David Rabin discusses how we can leverage cutting-edge neuroscientific research to train ourselves to develop resilience and improve our mental and physical performance under stress. While Dr. Rabin has developed a scientifically-validated wearable technology to help us do just this, he also believes that we have the ability to improve on our own without the aid of technology. Discover what makes our fight-or-flight instinct work against us and how we can prevent that from happening, what we can learn from paying attention to our Heart Rate Variability (HRV), and how we can start using Dr. Rabin’s research to tackle chronic stress and burnout in the workplace. Tune in and don’t forget to share this episode with others in your network.
