Did you know that a staggering 95% of leaders think that they are more influential than they actually are? This suggests a surprising lack of self-awareness among leaders in the workplace according to author and executive coach Stacey Hanke. So how do you slip into that 5% of leaders who aren’t deluded about their own level of influence? Stacey joins Halelly on this episode of The TalentGrow Show to share very actionable advice for escaping feedback-bubbles and ditching bad workplace habits that result from a lack of self-awareness. She also weighs in on the impact of our fast-changing technological world on human interactions and communication and discusses what we can do to effectively ‘stand out’ today and in the future. Plus, discover how Stacey ties in leadership and culture to parents and children, and what this compelling comparison means for leaders and managers! Listen and share this episode with others in your network.

Advocating enterprise-wide transformation through small steps and experiments, Simone shares actions that leaders can take at any level of an organization to encourage innovation. You’ll learn why intrapreneurship is so valuable yet such a challenge in large companies, which emerging trends are making an impact on innovation, and what structures you can put into place to leverage your team’s creativity and potential. I’m sure you’ve been on the receiving end of this. The question is: are you dishing it out? Listening in a distracted way during an important conversation. So-called “multitasking” when you really ought to be giving your full attention. Science has shown us that we can’t actually multitask on executive function brain tasks, so let’s stop the charade and quit this nasty and increasingly common habit. On today’s solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, Halelly will share a story from a recent workshop participant where this issue came up. Then she’ll explain why it’s not wise to do something else that requires your thinking bandwidth during critical conversations (the kind where there’s an important outcome and your relationship is on the line). Like reading or writing emails, for example. Even if others are doing it. Even if your senior leaders do it. Don’t. Take a listen now and share with those who could also benefit!

Happy New Year! To celebrate 2018 (and to allow us a little break from production during the holidays), we're rebroadcasting Halelly's favorite episode of 2018 - episode 83 featuring Daniel Pink. Enjoy!!

Original description: Timing, according to bestselling author Daniel Pink, is a crucial element of productivity and performance. In fact, research shows that our performance on cognitive tests is affected by up to 20 percent by the time of day alone. So how can we use this information to increase our own performance? In this exciting episode of The TalentGrow Show, Daniel Pink explains the big ideas behind his new book, When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, and shares very actionable advice for arranging your own schedule – and your team’s – in a way that takes advantage of your peak-performance times. Our lives are a never-ending stream of “when”-decisions, and Daniel shows us how to base these decisions on science rather than intuition or guesswork. Learn about the three performance stages we each experience in any given day, the different chronotypes we all fall into, and how to use all of this information to help us flourish at work -- especially as current or aspiring leaders. Listen and share with others!

Too often, high-performers are promoted to a higher position in a company and then left to their own devices to navigate the transition. What do you need to know to succeed at the next level? In this episode of The TalentGrow Show, Halelly brings back her first-ever guest on the show, author and executive coach Scott Eblin, to share insights from the newly revised 3rd edition of his best-selling book, The Next Level: What Insiders Know About Executive Success. He believes that there are three leadership imperatives that are critical to success: manage yourself, leverage your team, and engage your colleagues. Listen to discover the meaning of these imperatives while also learning about leadership presence, the importance of being humble and vulnerable with your team, and why finding a ‘work-life balance’ isn’t necessarily the right goal to set your sights on! Ultimately, Scott outlines which behaviors and beliefs you need to let go of at the next level, and which ones you need to pick up. Are you Open to Think? Author and speaker Dan Pontefract is joining Halelly for the second time on The TalentGrow Show, to share key insights from his latest book: Open to Think: Slow Down, Think Creatively, and Make Better Decisions. Dan believes that we leaders can optimize the way we think to make us more effective and shares actionable ideas and advice to help us do it. Using creative (and fun!) metaphors and examples, Dan teaches us how to cultivate what he calls the four ‘executive functions,’ how to implement a technique called reverse-coaching, and what it really means to be an open thinker. You’ll also learn how to take control of your time, including how to avoid a big pitfall many of us fall into when using our mobile devices! Is there a difference between being a leader and being a manager? Is one better than the other? Does one beget or require the other? Should we even be asking these questions?? Here’s another Ask Halelly episode of the TalentGrow Show, where Halelly answers a question from a listener, a learner in one of her corporate workshops, a member of the audience at one of her conference speaking events, or a member of the media. This week’s question came from a reporter who interviewed Halelly for a Fast Company article about this very issue. Halelly’s answer: Yeah, there is a difference. But, STOP SPLITTING HAIRS about it already! She explains why she loves to hate this question and wishes it would go away. Plus, she shares about a couple of exchanges she had about this on Twitter – were they favorable? Take a listen, weigh in with your own opinion, and share with others!
