While we take a vacation, we’re rebroadcasting a few of our favorite episodes from the archives of the earlier years of the show. This one was originally broadcast as episode 15. Enjoy! All of us are both leaders and followers. While we often focus on how to lead, author, speaker, workshop presenter and innovative thinker Ira Chaleff has focused his career on the beneficial use of power between those who are leading and those who are following in any given situation. Ira chatted with TalentGrow Show host, Halelly Azulay, about ways in which we can all become more courageous followers and why there are times when we should all choose the path of intelligent disobedience. Taken from the lexicon of guide dog training, Ira introduces the term Intelligent Disobedience to fit our model of leadership and followership in organizations, societies, and families. Based on his latest book of the same name, Ira talks about when we should feel the responsibility – even the obligation – to speak up and push back to those in power, because it is the right thing to do and it helps our leaders avoid big, possibly hurtful, mistakes. And Halelly and Ira discuss the important ways in which, as leaders, we can create the kinds of cultures that supports courageous followership. This episode will expand your view of leadership, courage, and living in a principled way and leave you deeply inspired.

Can poetry enhance your leadership skills? Poetry is an art form that can be both beautiful and obscure. But if we approach it in a purposeful way, it can also be a powerful tool to improve our communication skills, critical thinking and even our leadership skills. On this episode of The TalentGrow Show, media producer and editor-in-chief of Troubadour Magazine Kirk Barbera discusses how poetry can enrich your mind and help you articulate your vision as a leader. He reads us a compelling poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow called “A Psalm of Life,” and guides us step-by-step through unpacking the meaning behind it. You’ll discover the link between poetry and leadership success, and how you can train your mind to look at poetry in a new, purposeful way. Listen and don’t forget to share this episode with others!

Workshops, training classes, and university classes are rarely the only way to develop skills. In fact, they’re often not the best way to develop certain skills. Halelly wrote about this in her book, Employee Development on a Shoestring. There are so many ways that you can develop skills and knowledge – including leadership skills -- outside of the classroom and in a way that doesn’t interfere with your current role or take up a lot of time or money. In this short solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, Halelly shares three specific examples of non-training, inexpensive ways to develop your leadership skills – and those of the leaders you lead, of course – to help you become a better leader and/or get recognized as a leader if you’re not there yet. Leadership development is not out of reach! Take a listen and share with others.

In this solo episode of the TalentGrow Show, Halelly explains the science behind these threat responses and shows you how to avoid triggering this kind of social threat response and get more rational, better quality, and less disruptive responses in all your work interactions. To many, accountability means meeting your commitments in the eyes of others. For high performers, however, this is only a small part of what accountability really means. Henry Evans, Invited Agitator and Key Peacemaker for the C-Suite, joins Halelly on this episode of The TalentGrow Show to define accountability for high performers, identify common mistakes many leaders make, and teach you how to ‘Win with Accountability’ (after all, that’s in the title of two of his books!) You’ll learn about the pitfalls of overcommitment and poor vertical communication, why it’s important not to externalize problems that arise in your organization, and how we as leaders can promote an atmosphere of safety in which our team feels comfortable discussing and learning from mistakes. Plus, find out why you should always strive to include people who are different from you in your business planning. Henry is full of actionable advice for leaders, so don’t miss this one! Listen and share what you learned with others.

Confidence is a major contributing factor to accomplishing our goals and how we are perceived in the workplace. However, it's not a naturally occurring trait in all of us. Do you suffer from low confidence? This one’s for you, then. Here’s another Ask Halelly episode of the TalentGrow Show, where Halelly answers a question from a listener, a member of the audience at one of her conference speaking events, a learner in one of her corporate workshops, or a member of the media. Halelly first explains the difference between earned and unmerited confidence. Then she breaks down how we can build our confidence in a way that is professional and empowering, demonstrate our confidence in a way that gets us noticed for new opportunities, and avoid being seen as pompous or boastful, or worse, full of air and empty of content. Take a listen, weigh in with your own opinion, and share with others!

Workplace cultures vary greatly in terms of how strict or loose they are. Ideally, where a given workplace falls on this spectrum reflects the values and necessities of that business or organization. This raises a crucial question for us as leaders: how do we determine what is just the right amount of tightness or looseness in our workplace cultures? Professor Michele Gelfand of the University of Maryland joins Halelly on this episode of The TalentGrow Show to discuss the high impact role of cultural norms in the workplace. Listen to find out what factors tend to determine tightness or looseness in both organizations and nations, how leaders can harness the power of cultural norms to promote a higher level of effectiveness in their workplaces, and how you can use an understanding of Michele’s ideas to help you become a better negotiator. Plus, discover how these ideas can translate usefully on an individual level as well! Be sure to tune in and share what you learn with others.
